What is preimplantation genetic diagnosis?

The preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a diagnostic technique that, after the completion of an In Vitro Fertilization treatment, allows to test the collected embryos both genetically and chromosomically so as to select those embryos whose characteristics are optimal for implantation. With this technique we prevent the implantation of an embryo that could develop into the gestation of a baby with genetic or chromosomal anomalies, and therefore we avoid the hard decision of a therapeutic abortion on the part of parents.
Even if this technique is used, it is advisable also to the purpose of confirming the diagnosis, the realization of a classical prenatal diagnosis (amniocentesis, chorionic biopsy, etc.).

When is it appropriate?

In case that there are hereditary diseases such as hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, etc in the family, or in case of repeated abortions, several In Vitro Fertilization cycles without achieving pregnancy , advanced age of the mother or when there are alterations in the semen.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis legislation in Spain

According to Law 35/1988, of 22 November on assisted reproduction techniques, aspects of this technique include: Any intervention on the embryo must have the only purpose of diagnosis of severe diseases for their treatment, or to discourage the implantation. The non-therapeutic selection is prohibited.
